Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)

About Me
Growing up in suburban America, my impression of astrology was
extremely limited, to say the least. The Sun-sign astrology that
could be found alongside the comics section of the newspaper painted
a shabby picture of astrology’s real potential. Who’d have guessed
that this subject could turn out to be an astoundingly profound
mirror of reality?
Then at a period of my life characterized by pilgrimage and a
magnetic, devotional pull to spend more and more time in India, one
day while there in 1997 I went to consult a Vedic astrologer for the
first time. I had only vague ideas about what to expect and zero
expectations.
The reading itself was not showy or dramatic. Instead the astrologer
matter-of-factly described relevant specific details of my life in a
way that quietly and meaningfully confirmed that there truly existed
a blueprint for my life (whether my personality liked this or not).
I could recognize that behind whatever external situation of flux
and uncertainty, that life really was unfolding on schedule. A
portal to a clearer and truer view of Reality had just made itself
known.
There was something especially comforting and sensible to me how
this system for receiving guidance was methodical, technical and
also gracefully timeless, mystical and divinely inspired. It was a
living practice coming from a very ancient lineage of sages, and it
was fascinating to me that it could be studied according to definite
principles. Soon after this quietly pivotal reading, there followed
over the weeks and months an astonishing chain of synchronicities
that continued to confirm the depth of this science and also
supported the beginnings of my own focused study of Jyotish.
Biography:
Tamiko has been a student of Vedic traditions and yoga for over 20
years, first traveling to India in 1992 as a student of yoga and
meditation.
Her Jyotish studies include completion of the Jyotish Foundation
Course as taught by Hart DeFouw at The Ayurvedic Institute in
Albuquerque, N.M. in 1998.
Over the course of three trips to Bangalore, India, between
2005-2007 she completed an intensive program of independent study
under the tutelage of Dr. T.S. Vasan (an astrologer in practice for
over 40 years in Bangalore, India and the retired National Vice
President of the Indian Council of Astrological Sciences).
From 1998 until 2007, Tamiko spent much of the time living in South
India. As a devotee of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (the spiritual
teacher and renowned humanitarian widely known as Amma) Tamiko
provided Jyotish consultations for nine years as a service while
living as a resident of Amma’s ashram in Kerala, South India. During
this time, for a period of six years, Tamiko also provided Jyotish
consultations as a staff astrologer at Amma’s North American
programs during yearly twelve-city tours of the U.S. and Canada.
She graduated with a B.A. from Lang College of the New School for
Social Research in New York City in 1992, majoring in philosophy and
art history.
Tamiko has published various articles on Jyotish, including a
monthly forecast column in L.A.Yoga Magazine from 2007-2011 that was
pioneering in its use of entirely traditional principles of Vedic
astrology.
